Linux Medical News: "The Society of Imaging Informatics in Medicine recently released a special edition of the Journal of Digital Imaging focused on open source. While they are published in Springer, all the
articles on major open source packages in imaging informatics are open access. SIIM saw it fitting that open source articles shouldn't be locked into a proprietary publisher."

Abstract  The open source community within radiology is a vibrant collection of developers and users working on scores of collaborative projects with the goal of promoting the use of information technology within radiology for education, clinical, and research purposes. This community, which includes many commercial partners, has a rich history in supporting the success of the digital imaging and communication in medicine (DICOM) standard and today is pioneering interoperability limits by embracing the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise. This article describes only a small portion of the more successful open source applications and is written to help end users see these projects as practical aids for the imaging informaticist and picture archiving and communication system (PACS) administrator.

State Department employees are using Diplopedia, a new collaborative internal Web site, more often to share their expertise and experience with colleagues worldwide.

Diplopedia is similar in design and uses the same software as Wikipedia, which allows users to edit, update and contribute entries. State’s Office of eDiplomacy launched the wiki last September and there are now more than 1,400 active articles and 255 agency employees registered as editors, according to the program’s organizers. The site is housed on State’s sensitive but unclassified intranet and is accessible by all department employees.

so where is the Linux or Apple standards desktop configuration? Really if the government is going to standardize at least open the market up to new solutions. Also since everythign is going web-browser enabled, why not define a Linux or Mac desktop instead of handing more money over to Microsoft Consulting?

The Pentagon will soon unveil a new policy for the role of information and communications technology in stabilization and reconstruction operations, a Defense Department official said today.

The document will likely be released by the end of the summer, said Al Johnson, director of integrated information and communications technology in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Networks and Information Integration.

Marks: wants app's that scale and are flexible. former model of using proprietary worked BUT cost was high and needed specialty consultants to help integrate. Put together 2 options, one open source and one the former way. The open source way worked, SLA worked and you can do it with open source, big lesson for H&R block. Demonstrated that it can work well and interoperability was key.

Where are the holes in the OSS market?

Marks: no open source calendering almost a plethora of app's. too much choice, (Me: everything is relative)
Danner: would like to see app's that touch the user and see users get involved with the developers (me: marry end-users to developers)
Cahoon: we have Death by Configuration file, need better management tools.can't innovate on the highest skills in the company. skills that cross between the two worlds. adapt to existing packages in companies today.

Cahoon: Keeping vendors honest is important, oss helps. need vendors that are well matched up to you. Calling Oracle sucks, oss faster at feedback. Open source needs to slow down, companies like oracle need to speed up. need more predictability

A new software acquisition and development program is focusing on boosting efficiency and decreasing lifecycle costs for the Air Force through the reuse of applications’ components.

The strategy, said Charles Riechers, the Air Force’s principal deputy assistant secretary for acquisition, is to “encourage the use of open standards, open data interfaces and best-of-breed open source software solutions.”

“We are not mandating either open or proprietary solutions,” Riechers said last week at a luncheon in Vienna, Va., sponsored by the Northern Virginia chapter of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association. “But if you’re not using open standards, you have to tell me that and there better be a damn good reason why not. Proprietary technology is okay as long as it based on an informed decision.”

Forrester just issued an insightful report on the increasing adoption of open source in the enterprise. The verdict? Open source is everywhere, and taking an ever-increasing piece of the enterprise pie:

    Forrester has observed a pattern: Once companies start using open source software, usage expands from simple applications (e.g., file and print serving and email) to mission-critical application areas including customer-facing applications. Data from the survey on which this report is based indicates that a large majority of companies that considered open source ended up adopting it, and more than half have adopted it for mission-critical applications. Each industry has its own definition of mission-critical, of course, but the key point is that enterprises feel confident enough in the quality and security of the technology to use open source in areas that affect revenue and customers.
